PROJECT IDEAS

Developing a Giant Thumbtack-Style Push Pin

A thumbtack-style push pin uses a broad cap, short central shank, and pointed tip rather than the teardrop silhouette of a digital map marker. Cap profile, tip treatment, orientation, and the surface it appears to pin should define the display.

OBJECT TYPE

Lock the thumbtack silhouette before adding a setting

Reference a real push pin or provide front and side drawings of the desired cap. Domed plastic caps, flat drawing-pin heads, and molded ergonomic grips do not share the same outline. State which version the display should reproduce or whether it may be stylized.

Show the cap diameter, cap depth, shank length, and visible tip as separate measurements. The center section should not disappear when the object is viewed at an angle, and the enlarged tip should remain a visual cue rather than an assumed usable point.

POSE OPTIONS

Choose how the push pin meets its surroundings

The pose determines both recognition and the occupied space.

Inserted

A pin entering a board or scenic surface needs a defined angle, contact point, and visible portion of the shank.

Freestanding

A vertical or tilted object needs an intentional floor relationship that preserves the cap-to-tip silhouette.

On its side

A horizontal pin exposes the cap edge and full shank while requiring a longer footprint.

Grouped pins

Multiple colors or sizes should be planned as one arrangement with spacing and hierarchy, not as repeated filler.

PINNED MESSAGE

Design the board, paper, or graphic as a separate element

If the push pin appears to hold a note, photograph, map, ribbon, or sign, provide that artwork and its final dimensions. The attached material can establish scale, but it should not hide the shank or turn the display into a map-pin concept.

Define whether the board or paper is supplied by others, fabricated as part of the display, or only represented in the background. Include wall, floor, and camera relationships in one elevation.

ILLUSTRATIVE STUDIES

Compare an inserted pin with a freestanding display

The two concept images show different poses and settings. Neither is a completed WhiteClouds project. They help identify cap, shank, tip, and support questions before the buyer's actual reference and site replace the illustrated surroundings.

PUSH PIN BRIEF

Prepare the physical details that control recognition

The brief should make the office-supply form unambiguous.

  • Exact push-pin or thumbtack reference
  • Cap diameter, depth, contour, and color
  • Shank length and visible transition
  • Tip shape and nonfunctional display treatment
  • Inserted, tilted, horizontal, grouped, or freestanding pose
  • Board, paper, message, or adjacent artwork
  • Viewing direction and visitor clearance
  • Access limits, destination, and required date
