What Is TEDx? Planning a Dimensional TEDx Stage Display

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events operated under a license from TED. TED explains that the “x” means independently organized TED event. That distinction matters when a team plans stage signage: a dimensional display can support a licensed local event, but it should not suggest that the event is a TED conference or that TED endorses a particular fabricator, vendor, or design choice.

What TEDx means for event planning

A TEDx event has its own approved event name, organizer, venue, speakers, and production plan. TED’s current rules cover licensing, naming, branding, event content, and the way the event is represented to the public. Confirm the licensed event name and the organizer’s current brand requirements before artwork is released for fabrication.

Use dimensional letters as a stage element

Large letters can create a strong physical anchor for a stage, entry area, sponsor-free photo position, or event environment. The first decisions are the exact letter treatment, event-name spelling, overall width, height, depth, viewing angle, and camera frame. A display that looks balanced from the audience may need a different width or letter spacing for livestream and recorded video.

Plan for the room and the camera

Measure the stage, backdrop, lectern, screen, lighting positions, audience sightlines, and access path. Note whether the letters will be viewed straight on or from several angles. Share the camera crop, expected presenter position, stage flooring, and any required clearance so the display supports the event rather than competing with the speaker or screen.

Choose finish and lighting carefully

The surface can be planned for a clean matte appearance, a more reflective finish, internal illumination, or another approved visual treatment. Lighting should be considered with the venue team because stage fixtures, camera exposure, and the letter finish interact. Do not lock a lighting effect from a still reference image alone; describe the desired appearance and the operating environment together.

Respect the event’s approved identity

Use the exact approved TEDx event name and artwork supplied by the organizer. Do not add a generic TED logo or imply that a dimensional-letter supplier is part of TED. The event team remains responsible for license compliance, naming, logos, and public-facing event language. WhiteClouds can focus on translating the approved design into a physical display brief.

Account for delivery and reuse

Record doors, elevators, loading areas, stage access, storage, setup windows, and the number of events or venues involved. If the letters will travel, discuss transport-friendly sections, protective packing, handling points, and a repeatable setup. If the display stays in one venue, the brief can prioritize the final room and the cleanest stage presentation.

TEDx letter brief checklist

  • Licensed event name and approved artwork or brand files
  • Overall letter height, width, spacing, depth, and camera framing
  • Stage footprint, presenter position, screen relationship, lighting, and audience sightlines
  • Surface finish, illumination direction, color references, and visible sides
  • Doors, loading route, setup window, storage, transport, and reuse plans
  • Venue contact, schedule, approval path, and any restrictions on materials or equipment
