Crafting Innovation: The Journey of CO-INNOVATION Giant Tech Letters for Microsoft
The CO-INNOVATION giant tech letters stand as monumental symbols of creativity, precision, and storytelling. Developed for Microsoft (and partners) and fabricated by WhiteClouds, these letters transcend traditional signage to become immersive, interactive experiences. Fabricated using state-of-the-art technology, these letters integrate foam craftsmanship, advanced lamination, and cutting-edge interactive elements to bring Microsoft’s vision of innovation to life.
Transforming Vision into 3D Reality with Foam
The foundation of each CO-INNOVATION letter begins with expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam. This material is lightweight yet robust, making it ideal for large-scale installations. The letters were sculpted using precision CNC machines, ensuring the exact replication of the Segoe Pro Display font at an imposing 83 inches tall and 12 inches deep. Each letter’s foam base was then laminated with Sintra, a durable PVC material, to create smooth surfaces and add structural integrity.
The lamination process not only enhanced durability but also prepared the letters for high-resolution graphics and paint applications. Vibrant colors, chosen from Pantone codes, were applied with exterior-grade latex paint to ensure longevity. For some letters, vinyl graphics provided intricate detailing, such as reflective gold finishes and custom lenticular designs.
Interactive Elements That Tell Stories
The true magic of the CO-INNOVATION letters lies in their interactivity. Each letter was customized with screens, lighting, or mechanical elements to engage viewers and convey unique narratives:
Letter C (Sony): This letter featured a recessed 32-inch touchscreen and an interactive 3D hanging mobile shaped like a microchip. The mobile incorporated programmable LED lights that highlighted features in sync with the touchscreen content. A gold vinyl graphic on the front face replicated a microchip’s intricate design, providing a tactile, visually stunning experience.
Letter O (Jio): Representing linguistic diversity in India, this letter housed an interactive screen and 3D-printed buttons. These buttons triggered video storytelling, showcasing Microsoft’s technological solutions for managing multiple dialects. The front face, made of CNC-engraved Sintra plastic, highlighted text etched with precision, creating a tactile and visual connection to the story.
Letter N (NHS): Designed to emphasize Microsoft’s role in healthcare, this letter included a recessed screen flush with its face, tactile buttons, and illuminated features. The letter’s interactivity brought to life stories of how 1.2 million healthcare workers use Microsoft’s technology to collaborate more effectively.
Aesthetic and Functional Craftsmanship
Each letter underwent multiple stages of fabrication to ensure it met the design specifications and functional requirements. The fabrication process included:
- Cutting and Sculpting: EPS foam was cut with high precision to create the basic shapes of each letter. Complex designs, like recessed areas for screens and channels for LED lighting, were also incorporated during this phase.
- Lamination and Reinforcement: A layer of PVC was applied to the foam to strengthen the structure and provide a smooth surface for finishing. For letters requiring additional support, such as the T with its swinging armature, plywood backings were integrated.
- Graphics and Painting: High-resolution vinyl graphics and Pantone-matched paint finishes added depth and vibrancy to the letters. Custom designs, such as lenticular effects and reflective silver vinyl, elevated the aesthetic appeal.
- Assembly and Installation: Interactive elements, such as touchscreens, buttons, and LED lights, were carefully integrated into the letters. French cleats were used on the back of each letter for secure wall mounting, ensuring stability while allowing the letters to stand freely on the floor.
